3-5 B: The ending is the thing . . .

How SHOULD Hamlet end? Who should die? How should they die? Who should live? Why should they live? What should they do (after the play ends)? Why? Forget Shakespeare's ending and create your own:
  • Use the preceding questions to shape your ideas.
  • Generally speaking, what would you like to see happen at the end of this play? Why?
  • Develop your ideas fully; describe the events and provide clear reasons why you have chosen these ideas.

DO NOT repeat ideas presented by your classmates. DO NOT repeat yourself; build on your ideas.

DO make sure you build on your ideas. DO generate at least two full paragraphs of developed and supported arguments.

All responses are due by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24th.

  1. I think Hamlet should only kill Claudius because he is the one who killed King Hamlet. I think that he should kill him the exact same way that he killed King Hamlet because it is sort of revenge and revenge would be better if you killed him the same way he killed his father. Plus, since no one knew how King Hamlet died, I do not see why anyone would find out who killed Claudius. I think everyone else should live because no one really did anything wrong. Although I think Hamlet should also die because he killed Polonius for no reason. That was pretty dumb even though he thought it was Claudius. Like I said, many of the other people were just trying to help Hamlet out. They did not kill anyone or hurt anyone in any way. Therefore they should all live. I think that Hamlet should be stabbed because that is how he was going to kill Claudius and that is how he killed Polonius. I am a big fan of the person doing the killing getting killed by their own weapon. I think that there should be a lot of chaos at the end of the story because first the King shall die and then the Prince will die. That is a lot of death in such a short period of time. Plus, Polonius has just die so people would still just be starting to get over the death of him. After the chaos has seized, everything should go back to normal and they live happily ever after.

  2. In my opinion Hamlet should end by Hamlet killing Claudius in a hidden way. So that noone will find out that Hamlet did it. With this ending, Hamlet will have his revenge and he will not have any reprocussions. Hamlet then should have been able to freely express his love for Ophelia, and soon enough marry her. The queen, Gertrude, should not marry again, she should remain a double widow so to say. This is so that Hamlet will not have another reason to be so vengence seeking. Polonius will die of old age because he has been such a pain to Hamlet and Ophelia. This is so that they will be able to marry without any distractions. Hamlet should take over the Kingdom and rule with Ophelia. The murder is gotten away with clean, the queen is a widow, and Hamlet is happy with Ophelia.

  3. Ophelia sends a messenger to Laertes telling him of their father's death. Ophelia does not believe that Hamlet could be responsible for her father's death. She goes to Hamlet and tells him how much she loves him. Hamlet tells her the whole truth. He tells her about the ghost and how Claudius murdered his father. Ophelia and Hamlet bond closer because they have each lost a father that they loved. Laertes returns and he sees that his dad's death was an accident but it was Claudius' fault for starting the problem when he killed the king. Laertes and Hamlet plan to kill King Claudius and when he is having one of his drinking celebrations, they let some poinsonous snakes loose to bite Claudius. Claudius dies from the poisonous bites. Hamlet feels that he has finally respected his dad. Hamlet becomes King and Ophelia becomes his wife and his queen. Laertes becomes the Lord Chamberlain. Getrude falls apart. She cannot believe that Claudius murdered her first husband. She spends all of her time in mourning. The ghost of Hamlet's father appears to her each evening. She takes comfort in seeing him but she never leaves her bedroom.

  4. In my opinion I think Hamlet should end this way. First Hamlet will kill Claudius but it was be a special way he does it. He will sneak up on him when he is sleep. But Hamlet will see that his mom is in the bed with the king and he will flip out because Hamlet told his mom not to go sleep with him. While he is flipping out he will kill both of them. First he will kill the king by stabbing him and he will cut the queen's throat to make it look like a suicide. So in the end Hamlet will still be alive and will get away with murder. All in all Hamlet becomes the new king and he will marry Ophelia to become the queen.

  5. I think that Hamlet should have ended differently than it did. I think that Hamlet should not have murdered Polonious. He clearly did not deserve to die the way he did because clearly he did not do anything worth being killed over. Actually, I think that Hamlet is the one that should have been killed. During the whole play, all he did was abuse his power and continuously act insane. I think he was a terrible prince. I think anyone in this play would have made a better prince then Hamlet. He didn’t deserve someone like Ophellia and she clearly can find someone less Insane.

  6. I think that the play should end with Hamlet killing Claudius. The ghost told Hamlet to kill Claudius and only Claudius, and Hamlet saw his guilt during the "Murder of Gonzago" play. While Gertrude may have upset Hamlet by remarrying and not mourning King Hamlet enough. Gertrude didn't really do anything wrong nor did anyone else, or at least no one else did anything worth being killed over.
I think Hamlet should kill Claudius without having any blame be cast upon him. I think he should do this because he already put a plan in motion to throw suspicion away from himself and he shouldn't waste it. I think this may be hard though, I mean two kings mysteriously die leaving Hamlet as the sole heir to the throne? That may cast some suspicion on him. But I think that Hamlet could kill Claudius and perhaps frame someone else, like one of the King's guards. Hamlet could stab Claudius in his sleep and leave the bloody weapon in the possesion of a guard. And after the play ends Ophelia and Hamlet marry. With Hamlet not acting crazy anymore and Polonius dead they are free to show their true feelings for one another.

  7. I think Hamlet should end in a very dramatic and suspenseful way. After all the chaos that has been created between many of the characters, Hamlet should kill Claudius. I think he has gotten away with too much and should not stand to live under the throne. Also, I picture Hamlet killing Claudius in his sleep so he will not see it coming. It will be a quiet death so nobody would have to know, just how Claudius killed the king.
I do not think anybody else should have to die because they did not do much wrong. As the play continues, I would like to see Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship turn out for the better. Then, once the queen eventually passes Hamlet and Ophelia can take the throne. This works out perfectly in the end because nobody is there to reject their relationship and can show their true feelings. For the future, they will marry just as the queen did so they can bring a sense of peace into their life long commitment. Hamlet's calmness will shape their lives as king and queen forever, making the right choices and never forgetting their past no matter how tragic.

  8. Hamlet should kill Claudius in the end. He should murder him just as Claudius killed King Hamlet, Hamlet should sneak up on Claudius when he is sleeping and pour the poison in his ear. This way he will be getting his revenge in the same manner. With doing this though Hamlet will have a guilty conscience, so there are some consequences to Hamlets actions. For example he may go to jail if he poisons his uncle. But if he does not avenge his father his father’s ghost may continue to haunt him and will now be completely disappointed in his son.
Even though revenge isn’t usually the best option, Hamlet should still in some way avenge his father. Whether it is killing his uncle or if possible shows everyone that Claudius did in fact kill Hamlets father. Either option has its difficulties because it will be extremely hard to try and tell everyone in a town their king is a murderer especially when everyone already thinks that you are insane or mad. And if Hamlet were to kill Claudius he will be running the chance of getting caught and also living with a murder on his conscience.

  9. I think Hamlet should end in an intense sword fight between Claudius and Hamlet. The fight should end with both characters stabbing each other at the same time and dying very dramatically. This would be a very interesting and nail biting ending. It would also be good because Claudius would get what he deserved and Hamlet would die a happy man because he got his revenge for his father’s death.
The queen should defiantly live and witness the whole fight scene. It would make for a good ending with her emotions going crazy watching her son and husband battle to the death of each other. After the fight she should tell everyone what happened. The play should end with the Queen looking for a new husband but you never figure out who she goes for next. Her search could possibly leave for a sequel to Hamlet.

  10. I think Hamlet should kill Claudius in a open way, a way that everyone can see it. I believe that this is right because Claudius was having his ego soak all the pride and glory that people would give him during the wedding and the party. If he's going to be seen in his "best moments" then he should be seen at his worst as well, this way Claudius' hopes and dreams would crashes down him in front of his very eyes. By Claudius dying in front of everybody who followed him it's humilating & degrading and very much deserves it for the selfish motives that led him to kill King Hamlet.
I think that Hamlet & The Queen should live. They both know what was going on with Claudius however the Queen had a little bit more trouble digesting all the facts, whereas Hamlet knew what he has to do. For being what they both had been through, They should live happily ever after. I also think Hamlet should recieve a status of being a Legend for his noble act of killing claudius, Hamlet is giving Claudius a taste of Justice, which I think he needs very much.

  11. I think that hamlet’s ending should be surprising. When I read through some of these entries, they all said that Hamlet should kill Claudius. However I feel like there should be a different ending, because it shouldn’t be something that everyone is suspecting. I think that Claudius deserves punishment for killing the king, but it’s too obvious for the book to end with Hamlet killing him.
I think that the book will most likely end with Hamlet being the one that has an unfortunate fate, simply because he is so obsessed with wanted to revenge his father’s murder that he will do anything. He is starting to lose control already, as you can see with him stabbing Polonius. Especially when he doesn’t really seem to care that he stabbed the wrong person. Hamlet is definitely losing his sanity and I think it going to get worse during the story.

  12. In my opinion I believe the only person who would of deserved to be killed is Claudius by Hamlet. Claudius murdered Hamlets father just for himself to get power and without King Hamlet that made it alot easier for him. I believe that Hamlet should end with somewhat of a twist onto it. Intead of getting revenge and killing Claudius maybe Hamlet could confront him and help him more to realize what he has done. It would make everyone shocked and keep people wanting to know more. His mother would than not have to be put into misery again, her husband died and she remarried. If Claudius died also it would effect her more. If Hamlet were to kill Claudius I believe it would be done in somewhat the same way his father was killed, unexpected or he could just get a knife like he thought he had but instead killed Polonius. I thought Polonius should have lived even though he had some evil in him he was just caring for his daughter and shouldnt of lost his life. Hamlet could begin to stop acting as crazy as he was as the story goes on and maybe begin to get himself back to normal for the sake of himself and his family.

  13. I do not like the fact that Hamlet killed an innocent man, Polonius. Even though Polonius was spying on Hamlet, it was still unecessary that he had to be stabbed for no reason. I think Hamlet should definitely have ended by Hamlet killing Claudius. The whole entire play is based upon Hamlet trying to seek revenge on his father's murderer, Cladius, so obvioulsy the ending should be something along those lines. I am going to be very disappointed if Cladius is still alive at the very end of the story. It will seem as if the whole plot during the play was pointless and that Hamlet should not have wasted his time. He should kill him in a fashion that he would not be caught. He could make it look like a suicide or an accident. A suicide would make sense because of the guilt the king is feeling after the play Hamlet put on. For an accident, he could make it look like he fell somewhere and hurt himself fatally. In the end, I think Hamlet, the Queen, and Ophelia should live. Even though the queen remarried so quickly, she technically did not do anything wrong because she did not know that Claudius killed King Hamlet. All three of these people are innocent and deserve to survive.

  14. I think that Hamlet should end in a similar way that it began. Hamlet should expose Claudius, give up his crazy act, and bring justice to Claudius. I think it would only be fair to Hamlet and everyone else in the play that they know the truth about the king they are currently looking up to. By exposing Claudius for what he really is, Hamlet will enable himself to give up his feign of madness. Hamlet has only been acting crazy in an attempt to show the kingdom that Claudius is a murderer. By feigning madness, Hamlet has lost many friends and gained a few speculators, even enemies. If he gives up his crazy act than those friends will probably return to him just as they were there prior to all this starting. Lastly, I hope in the end of the story justice is brought to Claudius, whether it be through jail, being dethroned, or even being killed. It only seems fair that Claudius loses his crown one way or another. After all, he did have to kill to get there.

  15. Hamlet is a very simple play once you come to understand what is going on. Being able to create an alternate ending to the play is very interesting. At the end of the play I believe Hamlet should kill Claudius and finally get his revenge. Hamlet should kill Claudius the same way Claudius killed Hamlet’s father so Claudius will know what he put his brother through. I think that Hamlet and the Queen should live and stay a happy family. After Hamlet kills Claudius he should become king and find a nice Queen to settle down with. These two should live because they really didn’t do anything wrong from the beginning. Hamlet should stay alive for the whole play because he is a good person but he is angry. If I were Hamlet I would want to get revenge too so I am rooting for him in a way. The Queen should stay alive because I do not think she was involved in the death of King Hamlet and she is very kind. After the play ends I think that the Queen should never remarry and if she does she should wait a long time and talk to Hamlet about it first. Also Hamlet should find his own wife and become king. Hamlet is a very smart individual and is quite capable of running the kingdom.

  16. I think the final scene of the play is the suspense leading up to Hamlet killing Claudius. Hamlet has been trying ever since late Act I early Act II to come up with a way to get his revenge on Claudius. I think Hamlet will sneak into the king's room while he is sleeping and silently murder him. Hamlet will make sure it look like Claudius committed suicide. When morning hits, the queen will turn over and see Claudius with blood all over him and a knife by his side. Hamlet will avenge his father and no one will find out it was him. He will become the new King, marry Ophelia, and live a happy life knowing he aveneged his father.
I think it is only right that Claudius is the only one to die because he has been behind most of the tricks and plans to catch Hamlet crazy. Plus he is also a murderer, so he should be the one to pay the consequences. The Queen should be able to live because she has done nothing wrong in the play. She has only tried to help Hamlet with his madness. The only person I think that should of died, and they did, was Polonius. He was always in everyone's business and was annoying. He used his own daughter to come up with a plan to spy on her and Hamlet so see if Hamlet is really crazy. Ultimately, I think that Hamlet will have a surprising, but happy ending because order will be restored and Hamlet will have his revenge.

  17. In my opinion the way Hamlet should end is by having Hamlet and Cladius get into an intense sword fight and then when Cladius goes to stab Hamlet, the ghost of the king appears and Claudis gets stunned in fear and then Hamlet stabs and kills him. I think this shoud be the way that it ends because karma always comes back to haunt you and i think putting it into a literal term would make it seem right. Then after Claudis is killed, the ghost should then rise up and disappear (simulating going to heaven). Then Hamlet tells everyone what actually happened and how Claudis was a murderer from the beginning and then he tells them that this whole time he was acting crazy it was a scheme to take revenge on Claudis for what he did to his father. Then Hamlet becomes king and him and Ophellia get married and live happily ever after.

  18. I think it should end with Hamlet and Claudius in a fight to the death. It would be in a private area, where it was just them and nobody around. It would be a very suspenseful fight ending with hamlet winning. I think that Hamlet would do it in a way that made it look like suicide or an accident so he would not be blamed.
With Claudius dead, Hamlet would make up with Ophelia and they would be happy together and he would take over the throne for Claudius. His mother however, I believe would be told the truth by Hamlet. I believe that the Ghost will appear to him once again but this time, the queen would be able to see. She would hear the story and understand why everything happened. She would stay widowed after that. All-in-all, I think that at that point, Hamlet would return order and reign over the kingdom.

  19. I think that actually Hamlet would go crazy because i feel that his fake personality would end up becoming his permenant one because in movies today it happens to Spiderman in the third movie. The queen dies because she can not live without the person she loves, and on top of that opheilia thinks that should could be a leader under whoever the new king would be unless hamlet doesn't go nuts.

  20. Hamlet should end by Hamlet killing Claudius. They should start a big arguement about Claudius killing Hamlets dad and then those two just start fighting. It should be an intense fight but in the long run Hamlet would win by stabbing Claudius. Hamlet should live because he is the main character. He was the reason for the story and he should live because he is getting Claudius back for his fathers death.
After the play ends Hamlet should live happily ever after with everyone in his castle. Him and his mom would work out their problems and he would soon forgive her for marrying his uncle.
