1-2B: Reading the old-fashioned way

People constantly are claiming that print material (books, newspapers, magazines) is losing popularity because many people only read if they can read the material online (or with an electronic device).

Why do you believe that this statement is false, or that it should be false?  In other words, why does society still need printed books?  Provide examples from society and/ or from books to support your reasoning.  Remember, you must develop your arguments into approximately 2 paragraphs of insightful analysis.

DO post your response in conversation with your classmates; DO NOT repeat ideas presented by your classmates.

All responses are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15th.

  1. I do not believe that print materials are losing popularity because many people still use different forms of print materials such as books, newspapers, and magazines. It is true that many people read about topics online now, simply because that is easier then going to a library or buying a book. Either way, people should learn to not always take the easy way out and actually look something up.
People should still read printed materials. Everyone should know how to research things by book, instead of just looking it up online. Reading materials are a great way to learn new things. Many people enjoy reading whenever they can. It is a great way to spend some free time in your life. Also, many people rely on the daily newspapers on magazines for updates on affairs all over the country.

  2. I think that the opening statement in Ms. Alexanders blog post above should be false but is sadly somewhat true. A lot of people are entirely to dependent on technology. As silly as it sounds, having everything at the click of a button will not always work in our advantage. Every Sunday morning my dad walks down the street to get the newspaper on the corner when he could simply just get on the internet and get the same amount of information as he would from the newspaper, and over Christmas last year i offered to buy my mom the "kindle" which is like electronic book sold by amazon, she graciously told me that she appreciated the thought but it wasn't quite the same as having the pages of a book between your fingers, and i assume the reasoning for my dad walking three blocks for the newspaper every Sunday morning is the same.
As i said before having everything at the click of a button will not always work in our advantage. For one reason because technology is so undependable. There is no telling when it will crash or shut down or contact a virus. I think we as 21st century citizens are spoiled with how easy technology makes everything for us. It is good for us drive to the store and buy a book or walk down the street for the newspaper. In a weird way it keeps us more "down to earth".

  3. Slowly but sureley technology is taking over written peices. I dont agree with it but technology is more convinient to people. This school as an example, we carry around netbooks. I only have two textbooks compared to last year where I had around 5. Its much nicer but it is still more convinient.
I do believe that things should still be written down because there are all kinds of people that will do things in retaliation of other things. One thing is a virus. If a virus is planted on wikipedia then thats alot of people that are going to get it. Theres no Insurance policy against it and nothing you can do once its planted. A library carries thousands of books but if it were to be burnt down in retaiation they would be paid to be replaced.

  4. Technology is the epitome of laziness. What ever happened to writing notes? With these netbooks we never use textbooks or notebooks because all our answers are at our fingertips. The best answers are found in books though and it is hard sometimes to find sources that are reliable enough.

Reading is something I rarely do, but I would definitely prefer reading written books and magazines to computor screeens. It sometimes hurts your eyes and it doesn't represent the same authenticity of a written document. Figuritavely speaking, I am already prepared to turn the page on excessive technology in school.

  5. When it comes to reading most people prefer to take the easy way out by reading it online (sparknotes) watching a movie on it or just not doing it at all because they are lazy. Paper back books have been around for a really long time now and will be around for a long time to continue on. There are alot of readers out there and they will be the ones continuing to read the printed books for the reason that most of the time by not reading the actual paperback book your information you recieve could be wrong.
I do not believe printed materials are loosing popularity that much, but as time goes on and more technology is discovered who knows what will be the case. Reading is something everyone does at one point in their life and it is something that will help you move forward.

  6. I do belive that in today’s 21st century society we live in is lazy and also spoiled because of all the technology we have to our disposal. This also hurts our society because we are taking jobs away from the people who write and print the newspaper or magazines. I know this is true because I know that my mom gets all of the information she wants and needs is at her disposal by just going on the internet. Also my sister and I get all of our information on line because she is able to get access to “people.com” for the information she wants, and for myself I prefer to just go to “espn.com” then go and purchase the magazine.
I do belive that we still need printed book’s though because they allow us the peace of mind that we have the information were as if you always rely on the internet you run the risk of the computer not turning on. So I do belive that internet reading is good but I think that it should be an equal balance with having printed material so you can have the peace of mind that you have the material but use the internet for researching information easier and quicker.

  7. I do believe print materials are losing their popularity with todays society. This is happening in part largely because on-line materials are taking their place. On-line materials are easier to access, easier to find and easier to save to go back to at a later time. On the other hand, printed materials are expensive, and sometimes do not contain the information your looking for, then you are left with a book that you cannot really use. Due to that fact, many are switching to on-line articles and books because, quite frankly, they are just easier.
Although printed materials are less popular than on-line documents, they are still extrememly useful. You can always count on printed documents to contain true information, where as you can never be positive as to whether or not your reading on-line is fact. Due to that fact, i expect there to be a resurgance among printed documents in the coming years.

  8. I feel that print materials are not loosing their popularity. People still read printed books or magazines they get in the mail. Also I think that when you read a printed book you feel more accomplished when you finish and can see all that you read instead of exiting out of a website. Printed books are also a lot more reliable than any old website you find on the internet with information that could be completly false.
Although I feel that printed books and other reading material is still popular in todays society I do believe that people are using on-line documents. Now-a-days people are lazy and it is a lot easier to surf the web than to go to the library and get information or reading material. People do things to get them done and if they find some useless information on the inernet that could be untrue or incorrect they will use it anyways just to get what they are doing done. Overall I think that printed material is still very popular but for some people it is easier to just go on the internet to find something to read.

  9. I don't think paper material is going out of style because everyday you see people reading paper material. If you go to a gas station in the morning you will see a lot of people are buying newspapers and magazines. I think reading paper material is better than reading things on the computer because reading on the computer tends to hurt my eyes. I would rather sit in a cozy chair reading a book then be in an office staring at a computer all day.

I think most people read from the computer because most of the home pages people have such as yahoo, msn, and others all have recent news stories once you get on to the internet which tend to draw people to read right from there.
Reading from the computer is really popular because it doesn't cost any money. Some people don't want to go out to the store to buy a newspaper or magazine when most websites have those articles available via their website.

  10. I believe that thanks to the internet and its seemingly infinitely vast amount of information (false, opinionated or otherwise) most people are not as ready or willing to go out and buy a book or newspaper or even a magazine simply because all of the information provided in these tangible items is easily accessible digitally somehow. A few such examples come to mind: one is the fact that any newspaper article ever written no matter how minuscule, minute or frankly unimportant it may be, one can most likely find it somewhere on the internet. Another example of this digital-aged reading is the introduction of the ebook. The ever growing popularity of the idea of having multiple books easily accessible on one single, rather small, electronic device will sometime in the near future all but put printing companies out of business. It’s almost as if they should just give up their companies and hand over all their assets to Macintosh and Amazon to further support their respective devices. The idea of a real physical piece of literature or any book or printed item relating seems like it will never die but I do believe that someday the only use for books will be collector’s items and fire kindling. It kills me to say this but it is true, I honestly don’t think printed books are all that necessary. I mean I feel more connected to whatever it is I am reading when I have it as a real tangible object but I also have to agree that it is so much more convenient and takes up less space and wastes less paper (for those environmentalists out there) to read it digitally. The only real downside to the ebooks is the price of the devices themselves. If they were more available to everyone instead of people who are willing to blow $130 or more then they’d be even more popular and the process that will eliminate physical books would proceed much more rapidly.

  11. Hello Ms. Alexander and Classmates. I don't think that printed materials such as newspapers, magazines, and books are losing popularity because alot of people still order magazines and receive the newspaper daily.Tons of people still read magazines and newspapers daily.

I do believe though that books are losing popularity because it seems like all the books are starting to go online. More people are going online to read rather then going to the store and buying the books.

  12. I believe that paper materials such as paper books, newspapers and magazines are still popular in our society today. They are a good source to locate information from the past and present topics. I believe people aren't frequently usuing paper materials because our technology is so advanced computers can do all the work for us. This is upsetting because the children of the future will not be able to experience any such events from the past and libraries may not even be exhistant.

  13. This statement is false, books, newspapers, and magazines are still very important parts of our community. They are all vital ways that people who are not on the computer regularly stay in touch with the outside world. Also most people prefer to stare at a page in an actual printed book, than at a computer screen. Pritned materials will eventually run out of favor with todays society, but we are a long way off from that point. Even though the generation coming up has been born into a world of technology, we cannot replace the importance of sitting down and reading an actual book.

Books teach young kids how to sit down and have patience, and develop an understanding and apreciation for all the work that went into making what they hold in their hands. With a computer we get so many different articles a blogs popping up everyday that it becomes a normal occurance to just exit out. With all the distrations of the internet when you are trying to read something, I feel people loose sight of what they are sitting down to do. With a book we don't have these distractions. Technology is growing in many ways, but for now I believe that these print materials are safe.

  14. I do not think printed materials are going out of style in todays society. People still read news papers, magazines, and class rooms still use text books. I still believe printed material is very important.

Printed books are a lot more reliable because any one can easily go on the internet and tamper with or make up anything they want. With a printed book it is a lot easier to be sure what you are reading has not been corupted. Althought printed books are very important on line reading has become very popular. I believe this has to do with peoples lazy atitude. Hopefully as time goes on people with not get rid of printed materials all together.

  15. I think that this statement is true because, most books can be bought online now and people just download the book and freely read it whenever they want, but to the people who dont have these luguries would still have to buy newspapers, and books, etc

  16. Technology is sometimes a really good thing. Sometimes technology is not a really good thing. When it comes to using technology to replace written things, I don't believe that is a good idea. People have been writing for a while now and computers only came up in not even the last hundred years.

Written things have a value that computer generated things don't. Think of something like the US Constitution. The original document is prized almost like a piece of art. It wouldn't be the same if something like that were typed up in a microsft word document. Reading printed material is just something that should not be replaced by technology, granted it makes it easier, but it doesn't really make it better.

  17. There was a time when people completely got their information about society, education, entertainment, etc. from books, newspapers and other printed materials. Which is very hard for 21st century students like myself to relate to. Now however it seems like more and more literature is turning toward technology to reach out to its readers, because its convent, easy access, and some might argue more efficient. We live in a time when a huge percent of communication is done through a cell phone or on a lap top, so it makes sense to incorporate literature the same way.
In my option I think printed materials are better than technology. I also want to point out the fact that a lot of student that answering this question agree with me. I think it’s strange that there’s a good percent of people that disagree with technology taking over the media, when it continues to grow and get even bigger.
I agree with Abby in saying that technology is undependable. There’s evidence around us everywhere of that, such as cars breaking down, and computers crashing. I also agree with Corey who said this school is an example of technology replacing things. It’s is very useful that we have netbooks but they can also be a distraction, and used ineffectively. Part of the appeal of technology is laziness, I think it’s good to have to work to find things out, it teaches us to be dedicated and committed.

  18. I think that though the popularity of electronic reading material is increasing, I do not foresee the complete loss of printed materials any time soon. There are many faults and bugs in technology and, though it is amazing and innovative, these problems take away from the luster that electronic documents give.
Due to the unreliability of electronic devices, it is unwise to solely rely on them to hold all off the cultural writings of our world. At any time those documents could be lost or destroyed and we would therefore no longer have a copy of the work. With a physical paper copy however, we have a substantial piece of literature that we can always rely on to have. I think that people have a connection to the material. That is my sole reason for why the popularity of electronic documents will not take over paper material.

  19. technology is the new biggest thin in ease and convience. The internet is faster, and more convenient to the every day consumer. Books are still important. If you lose power or get a virus on your computer you will need some other source of information, and books will always be there. The price of books is another reason that online resources are becoming so popular. The majority of internet documents are free, but the books cost money at a book store. The last thing is storage. Books take up a lot of space if you have a lot of them. Yet a computer can hold just as much information in a lot less space.
