2-3 B: The War of the Christmas Carols

Everyone loves Christmas songs, right? Whether chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, you're riding in a one-horse open sleigh, or shepherds are watching their flocks by night, Christmas music is guaranteed to put a smile on your face . . . except when it doesn't.

Choose the “best” or the “worst” Christmas carol or Christmas song and defend your opinion/ position with specific arguments and details from the song. Consider elements such as lyrics, melody, rhythm, singer(s), message, etc. Of course, one person’s favorite Christmas song might be another person’s least favorite Christmas song, so I imagine we’ll see some debates develop in the responses.

As always, DO NOT repeat your classmates' ideas. If you need to, please discuss your second or third favorite (or least favorite) Christmas song (assuming other people "steal" your ideas).

All responses are due by 4:00 p.m on Tuesday, December 21st.

  1. The Christmas song I choose to share with you would have to be Christmas Shoes. This song is something I enjoy listening to every Christmas. I enjoy listening to christmas songs that have a meaning and to me I feel this one does it the most. Christmas Shoes is a song about a little boy who has a very sick mother around the Christmas holidays. She has been in the hospital for a long time now and they say it is almost her time to go, the last thing he says he must do for her is buy her a pair of shoes. He loved his mother more then anything and that was his last request before she passed. This song helps you to think about how thankful we should be for everything we have, for our families, friends and health for this wonderful holiday so it can be enjoyed with happiness and excitement, not depressed and sadness.

  2. In my opinion “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” is one of the all time best Christmas songs. This Christmas song is my favorite, and I love singing and hearing it on the radio. I think this song is an all time classic because the lyrics are about how different this reindeer was from all the other ones and even though the other reindeers laughed and poked fun at him someone saw the beauty in it. Santa saw that he was unique and should be rewarded for it. Santa gave Rudolph the important job of guiding his sleigh every Christmas because his nose was so bright. I like the message hidden in the song because it’s letting everyone be aware that even though you’re different or have something unique about yourself, you should not be embarrassed or feel ashamed about it. You should embrace it, and you may even be rewarded for it. The message can be for everyone who’s ever been made fun of due to a unique ability or feature, it’s a great song that helps boost confidence and raise self-esteem.

  3. The best Christmas song in my opinion, would be "Do They Know Its Christmas", also known as the "Feed the World" song by Band-Aid. The song was made with a collaboration of different artists who came together in an attempt to help with the world hunger issue in Ethipoia. This song was released in the early 1980's and there are many artists from the UK. Although they were given no more then 24 hours to record, that did not stop the song from becomming a hit overnight. The song sky rocketed and became the UK's biggest selling single within a week.
The song reached the top of the charts and there it stayed for five weeks. The songle sold more then 3.5 million copies. The song and title have a very big meaning. Its asking if the children of Ethiopia even know that its Christmas because of how poor they are and never get Christmas presents. Do they know what
Christmas is? Do they know its Christmas at all?

  4. In my opinion the worst Christmas carol is Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. I think it is a terrible song because how can you get run over by a reindeer? Everyone knows that reindeer fly so unless this “grandma” was flying too she shouldn’t have gotten run over. I think there are some details missing from the story about the crash site. I also cannot stand the guys voice who sings the song. He is not very good at singing at the song just bothers me.
The only good thing about the song is the tune. It is kind of catchy and easy to remember. Although it is catchy it does have some draw backs. For example if you here the first few seconds of the song you will have it stuck in your head all day. I just don’t think that the song is a very good Christmas song, and it does not put me in the Christmas spirit at all.

  5. In my opinion the worst Christmas song is the Twelve Days of Christmas. I know many people love this song but I cannot stand this song. I find this song pointless and very annoying. The way the song repeats all the “days of Christmas” is very annoying. Another thing I find weird and wrong with this song is that there most certainly is not twelve days of Christmas. From years of experience I have come to the conclusion that there is only one day of Christmas ergo the song has no point. There are a few other things that annoy me in this song. If you listen to the words of this song you will find them outrageous to say the least. Talking from experience I have never in my days seen some one receive eight maids of milking or ten lords of leaping. Even if one were to receive these gifts why would they need more than one maid of milking or more than one lord of leaping? This songs message confuses me and leaves me with more questions than I would like in a Christmas song.
I have already touched on this topic in my previous paragraph but now I would like to go into more detail about the rhyme and flow of the song. I honestly do not see how someone could like the repetitiveness of the lyrics and the flow is the same throughout the whole song. I find many problems with this song and I hope other people share the same views I do regarding the Twelve Days of Christmas.

  6. I do not like the song "Rudolf the red nosed reindeer." Everybody knows the song so im not going to bother repeating it, but the fact of the matter is, his fellow peers/reindeer abused him, and made fun of him, and wouldn't let him play reindeer games. Then when they need him in a state of emergency or else theres no christmas, he just says, "ooo I'd love to help even though you make me miserable, and pick on me and don't let me play riendeer games."

    what a pushover....what a pushover.

Another song I cannot stand is "frosty then snowman." some kids steal a magicians hat and place it on thier cold hearted friend. Then the snowman kidnapps them to show them how to play tricks on poor innicent people in the town. When the magician finds out who took his hat, he asks for it back and they dont give it to him. Frosts not even gonna last forever, so just give it to him anyway.

  7. The WORST christms song of all time is called Allgria. It is a spanish song sung by a group of singers who are not good at all. Every year Ms. Bauman makes her classes sing christmas songs for the school and this year Allegria is on the list of songs that might be sung. The muic in the background is horrible and it really bothers me that someone would actually buy this song. The entire caroll is based on hapiness and joy and yet I do not feel happiness or joy in the least bit when I hear this song. Some might say that this song is a Spanish original and it has meaning in their culture, I say that the song is confussing and just plain annoying. When the words are translated from spanish to english they do not make sense. Basically it is my least favorite christmas song of all time and I hope there are others out there who agree with me on the subject.

  8. My favorite Christmas song has got to be the new/old version of baby it's cold outside by the cast of glee. Every time I hear it on the radio I get this 'feeling' that good christmas songs give me this time of year. I'm not even a big fan of glee but I think the song is great. I think everyone comes together and sings what I consider a masterpiece.

  9. I think the best christmas song is definitly "Frosty the Snowman." Its the best because not only does it put a giant smile on everyones face when they hear but it is also a fantastic movie which kids love to watch during the christmas season. And then when it snows outside everyone rushes out to make their very own Frosty the Snowman. And besides what other object can you sing too that will bring it alive?! Frosty is a great guy and that is why i chose the song about him.

  10. In my opinion the best Christmas song is Frosty the Snowman. It is an energetic song with an upbeat rhythm and melody. People of all ages can enjoy and also sing along to the lively tune he portrays. The title of the song gives children an image of a snowman right away and as you go on with the song it talks about a corncob pipe with a button nose and two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty represents the season of Christmas and giving throughout the holidays. Children all around the world build snowmen to dress up and share with families. He is a symbol of comfort, joy, and peace. To me, Frosty the Snowman is a Christmas carol I can share with my children and grandchildren. I also believe the song will never get old to anyone who has Christmas spirit.
