2-4 B: Christmas Viewing

'Tis the time to wrap presents, sing carols, visit family, and . . . watch movies! Your task is to recommend a movie to your classmates. Of course, you should not give away the ending or other essential information that would ruin someone's viewing pleasure, but you DO need to "sell" the movie to your peers by making it sound enticing and irresistible to your classmates. Make sure that you include specific ideas from the movie and that you let us know what interests will be sparked by this movie (in other words, into what categories would you put the movie? Why?). DO NOT write about ANY movie discussed in Blog 2-3!!!

This response might require 1 long paragraph instead of 2 paragraphs, but your response must still be detailed and developed!

No more than THREE people may recommend the same movie; if you DO recommend the same movie as one or two other people, DO NOT include any of the same ideas as those other people (I would prefer that each person recommends a different movie).

Please note (if you have not done so already) that the directions DO NOT say that the movie needs to be a Christmas movie; it just needs to be a movie that you recommend people watch over the break.

All responses are due by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4th.

  1. I would highly recommend for those who are deprived and have not watched it yet, a Christmas Story. It is movie about a typical depression age family at Christmas time. The memorable lead character Ralphie is a young boy that wants one thing for Christmas, A Red Ryder Daisy BB Gun. Unfortunately every person he tells his Christmas wish to responds with the same statement "You'll shoot your eye out!" The movie is a hilarious narrative by 'Older Ralphie' telling us young Ralphie's thoughts throughout all of the funny situations happening in his life leading up to Christmas. There are times where Ralphie goes into 'day-dreams' and we see his version of how a scene would play out, like when his teacher is grading papers and he she hates all of the class' works save his of course, or in the beginning of the movie where Ralphie sees himself as the wild west sheriff 'Old Blue' and saves his family from bandits with his Red Ryder BB Gun. There are little odes to the time period as well which somewhat immerse you into the atmosphere of the movie. Like Ralphie and his little brother listening to "Little Orphan Annie" on the radio. This over-exaggerated Christmas comedy is always a fantastic Christmas favorite in my family. We watch it every year and it never gets old.

  2. I would highly recommend the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas to anyone watching Christmas movies over break. The Grinch is about the little town of Whoville which is somehow located inside a snowflake. That little town of Whoville loves Christmas and really goes all out for that holiday. But then there is the Grinch who lives in his own compound in the tallest mountain in all of Whoville. He HATES Christmas. I am pretty sure he hates Christmas because he was so different from everyone when he was a kid. He was green and and everyone else was white. They all laughed at him and he hated that. Then he ran away to live by himself and leave his foster parents alone to cry and wonder where and why he had gone. This movie was pretty much about the title of the movie. The Grinch steals Christmas. I can't exactly remember why he does it but he practically gets a big bag and dresses up as Santa and goes down and steals everyones presents, trees, food, etc. The town of whoville was very disappointed but they still celebrated as any person would. The Grinch was fooled by this wondering why they were all still happy. The little girl invites him to their celebration. He wins a award and is so happy. He relaizes that Christmas is more than presents and he celebrates with them and their dinner and gives all the presents back. It is a great movie.

  3. The movie I want to recommend to watch over the Christmas time is A Beuatiful Mind. The movie is a true story about a famous mathematician John Forbes Nash. Jr and his life. He arrives at Princeton University as a new graduate student. although he was promised a single room, his roommate Charles Herman, a literature student, greets him as he moves in and soon becomes his best friend. They together do a lot of crazy things such as writing on the wall with paints and breaking the windows in a library. After the graduate school, Nash was assigned to MIT to teach a math class there but he was proven to have a mental disease, dilusion. On a return visit to Princeton, Nash is invited to a secret Department of Defense facility in the Pentagon to crack a complex encryption of an enemy telecommunication. Nash is able to decipher the code mentally, to the astonishment of other codebreakers. Here, he encounters the mysterious William Parcher who belongs to the United States Department of Defense. Parcher observes Nash's performance from above. Parcher gives Nash a new assignment to look for patterns in magazines and newspapers. He must write a report of his findings and place them in a specified mailbox. After being chased by Soviet agents and an exchange of gunfire, Nash becomes increasingly paranoid and begins to behave erratically. Despite all these adversities, he finally wins the Nobel Prize for his findings in Economics. At the stance, his secret is discovered and there's hugh twist. It is a great movie to watch because it is very thrilling how he overcomes his hardships and hides his secret till the end. I highly recommend this movie for the Christmas movie because it can be a good family movie.

  4. The movie I recommend for you to watch this break would have to be my old time favorite, Ill be home for Christmas. This movie is about a boy who ends up stuck in the middle of nowhere while attempting to make it home for a beautiful Christmas with his family to prove to his family and the love of his life that he can do something right. I love this movie so much because it is good to watch with the family and teaches you the lesson of when you set your mind to something you can achieve it. It also gives you a great laugh for all ages. I watch this movie at least three times over break and will continue to in the future and encourage you to do the same!

  5. The Grinch who stole Christmas (the original cartoon) is a must see film! This movie started out as the classic Dr. Seuss kid’s book. The book and the movie were extremely popular, and most people have loved the tale since they were kids. However if for some reason you haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy this movie I highly suggest you get on it and stop feeling left out. Dr. Seuss’s creativity is shown in this movie, which is both comical and unique from any other holiday movie. This Movie was created for kids but I believe it is a great Christmas movie for all ages.
The Grinch stole Christmas tells a heartwarming tale about a bitter and lonely Grinch who despises Christmas. He lives near “Whoville” where everyone loves celebrating Christmas by being kind and loving to one another. In order to “Stop Christmas from coming somehow” the Grinch pretends to be Santa and steals everyone’s present. He thinks his plan worked until his surprise he realizes taking any present didn’t discourage the cheerful “who's” from having Christmas. He realizes that the joy of Christmas is not about the present at all, but be merry and celebrating the holiday. This story has a good moral for everyone not just kids, that Christmas is not about gifts but being happy and grateful for everything that you already have, such as your family. Once you see this movie it will be one you’ll watch every year. After all he only person that wouldn’t enjoy this movie is a Grinch!

  6. My favorite christmas movie is Christmas Vacation. Christmas Vacation is a hilarious screwball-comedy starring Chevy Chase has a father of a family who is hosting Christmas for his entire family. The movie is absolutely hilarious and entertaining, I always watch it on Christmas Eve for a good laugh. The movie is focused on Clark Griswall(Chevy Chase) and how he is trying to make the perfect family christmas but always runs into an obsticle that messes up his plan(s), this includes some family members stupidity. My favorite moment in the movie is when the senile grandmother believe she is hearing a noise, Uncle Louis comments back saying " You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin factory!" Overall I must admit this is by far my favorite christmas movie, if you love to laugh as I do; I highly recommended it. You won't regret it.

  7. If I could chose a movie to recommend it would be a year without a Santa Clause. I reccomend it not only because my mom has to watch it every year, but I think its cute. In this movie, Santa Clause ends up getting sick and says that he cant deliver presents, so two of his elves along with a baby reindeer go around making arrangements so they can deliver the presents themselves. On their way, they end up meeting mother nauture, and the heat and snow miser. Many other things happen along the way. The whole movie makes for a great time for the whole family and i recommend it!

  8. I would defiantly recommend the movie Elf. Elf is a hilarious movie about a boy who was raised by elves in the North Pole and then goes to find his real father. Buddy the elf is played by Will Ferrell and he does a great job portraying a real life elf. He is so funny in the movie and it is a holiday favorite for me.
The movie starts out with Buddy being a baby and then he grows up with elves, but he realizes he is not really and elf because he is ten times their size and he is not very good at making toys. He then learns that he crawled into Santa’s bag as a baby and he was taken back to the North Pole. After he becomes old enough he decides to go find his dad in New York City. The story of Buddy finding his dad and what he does when he finds him is wonderful and I really recommend this movie so you can see for yourself how funny it is.

  9. I would have to recommend everybody to watch Anchorman over the break. The main character is Will Ferrell, and who doesn't love him? This is hands down one of my favorite movies ever. It is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again and still love it each time. It is basically a comedy about a man who is on a news team and gets fired because of a new person on the team, which is a woman. It does not have much of a plot, but then again most comedy movies are made more for laughs than anything else. This is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. I have seen it more times than i can count and it is still hilarious. I recommend this movie to anyone who needs a good laugh. This is definitely the movie to watch to put you in a better mood.

  10. Although it's not a Christmas movie, Law Abiding Citizen is easily the greatest film of 2010. It's a crime movie where Shelton (Gerard Butler) sees his wife and daughter get murdered, and the prosecuter Rice (Jamie Foxx) settles a deal with the killer that one will be lethal injected and the other with only a few years in prison.Obviously Shelton would be furious because the main killer got only a few years in prison, so he's out for revenge. He kills numerous people involved with the case, even while in prison. He seems to always be one step ahead. It is such a complex plot and it makes you think how well, and fair the justice system really works.I reccommend it because it is such a great thriller and it keeps you guessing.Jamie Foxx is my favorite actor because he plays such a diverse group of roles, and this is one of his best yet.It so suspensful and it captures you right from the start

PS: Everyone, I picked the movie ELF last blog so I didn't want it to seem thatI didn't like Christmas or something.

  11. Every year it seems as if the same movie shows up on my tv this time of year. The movie's name is The Mighty Ducks D2 and of course I would recomend this movie to all. Imagine if you were a small town hockey team who was instantly thrust into the national spot light. The movie is about a junior hockey team in minneapolis minesota coached by Gordon Bombay "the Minnesota Miracle man". One day Gordon recieves an offer from Hendrix sports to coach the U.S.A junior oympics hockey team. He eventually accepts the offer and takes his old team with him. Along the way a few other new players join the team, coming from various places around the country. Will they come through and win the championship for the U.S.? Or will they fail to bring home the gold? The only way to fin out is to watch this classic film.

  12. The movie I would recommend to my peers is Coach Carter. This is an inspirational movie about a high school basketball team in a rundown section of Richmond, Virginia. In the start of the movie, the team is searching for a new coach for the third time in two years. They do eventually find a new coach, played by Samuel Jackson. As the story goes on, the coach makes the team realize that their future comes before their basketball. And the only way for them to reach their future is by going to class and doing well in school. I particularly liked the fact that the coach forced the students to bring up their grades if they wanted to play for his team. I liked this aspect of the movie because it applies to every school in the country. It shows that school should come after sports and not the other way around. In many cases it is the sport that is put before grades. Eventually, the majority of the students brought up their grades and graduated.

  13. The movie that I recommend watching is it’s a Wonderful Life. This movie is good because it is filled with great lessons and really shows the Christmas spirit. In this movie the main character George Bailey is a very successful business man and on Christmas Eve he finds out his uncle looses a great amount of money and now George’s business will be destroyed unless he finds the money. George is a very generous man and he gives money and advice to whoever needs it. But when George needs it the most no one is there for him. He has no choice but to turn to the richest but most greedy man in the town, Mr. Potter. Mr. Potter offers George a job but he refuses, this angers Potter so he tells George he is worth more dead than alive. This combined with every other problem in his life depresses George so he tries to kill himself. This is when an angle saves George and shows him all the good he has done for all the people and all the good stuff he has in his life. This movie really teaches you how to appreciate all the things you might take for granted in life.

  14. Even though this movie has nothing to do with Christmas but it was one I saw twice over the break was Devil. The movie was a little scary, action packed, and adventurous. After the movie is filmed in Philadelphia so it had to be a good one and they use names of streets and buildings that we all would know. There are 5 people stuck on an elevator and the devil finds its way inside one of the people in the elevator. The maintenance people and security try to help them out but the devil is strong then them except the one guard notice the video tape from the elevator had frames of the devil on it and he was very religious. The main cop leading the investigation didn’t believe at first but did at the end after the movie took a lot of twist and turns. The ending was very creepy but intense. I highly recommend this movie because it shows how God works against the devil and the movie was good enough for me to see it twice.

  15. My favorite movie of all time would have to be Love & Basketball, if you haven’t seen it yet I recommend you watch it. The movie is about how two high school basketball players Quincy McCall (played by Omar Epps) and Monica Wright (played by Sanaa Lathan) who grew up next door to each other and went to the same high school and play in the NBA. Both of them had an extreme passion for the sport, and they wanted to continue playing throughout college. Quincy and Monica started off as best friends, but their relationship soon flourished. The movie is divided into four quarters, like a normal basketball game but it takes you through the trials and tribulations that both main characters had to endure to reach their goal and the ups and downs of their relationship. I’ll place this movie in the romantic, and drama category. In the end…..I’ll let you decide if the movie depicted the journeys all high school students had to face whether its about family, relationships, college search, and athletics.

P.S. Even though I didn’t mention it, my favorite Christmas Movie is How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the non-animated version.

  16. I would recommend the movie "Inception". It is such a different and unique film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio. Inception is a sublime brain-twister of a movie that keeps you thinking the entire movie. Within the movie their is traits of deciet, death, love and tragedy. While watching the movie you will question your own thought process a million times to just get threw one scene in the movie. The director must have spent alot of time researching the human mind and dreams. For an example, the entire movie is about the science of dreams and how the human mind works. Then he disects the dreams into parts, this would not come without deep research and time. "Inception" is the best movie that came out during 2010.

  17. One movie I like a lot is the movie "Avatar". This movie has action and even a love interest. I enjoy this movie because the action and the plot make the movie entertaining. Jake Sully has to choose whether to help the corrupt and uncaring corporation in mining a rare ore, or help the native fight back against their oppressors. I would recommend that anyone who has not seen this movie to see if they like it.

  18. I would have to recomend National lampoons christmas vacation because of the wackyness of the the movie and how it describes the love for family on christmas and the crazyness it brings knowing that your whole family is now under the same roof as you now. One scene involves the christmas tree being caught on fire and getting a new one was a impossible task so they cut a pine tree from the front lawn out and their was a family of squirrels in it and they tore up the Griswald's house but at the end of the movie its about the family's love for each other and explains how important family company is on Christmas, i strongly recommend this movie to any christmas lover who hasnt seen it because it beloeve it is a christmas classic.

It was about a group a guys that rob banks and security money cars in order to get money and as work for other people. After each of their robberies that tell each other they are done forever but then there is a twist at the end for you to watch on your own. It is a great movie which will keep you focused from beginning to end. Its definitly a movie that you would like to watch over and over.

  20. I would recommend the movie the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. This movie is about a small town called Whoville, where there's Christmas spirit everywhere. All the Whos in the town love the Christmas season except for one, the Grinch. The Grinch lives way up in the mountains over looking the town of Whoville, and he hates everyone and anything to do with Christmas. The movie show us how people can have change of heart by just opening up their eyes and seeing the joy in life. Most of all it shows how even the tiniest Who can make a difference.
