2-3 A: The War of the Christmas Movies

What is the best Christmas movie/ show ever? What is the worst? Is there one Christmas movie that you just HAVE to watch each year . . . or one show that you avoid at all costs? For better or for worse, what makes the show stand out? The story? The characters? The style? Something else?

Choose ONE movie (best OR worst, not both), and craft persuasive arguments (supported, of course, by evidence) that convince us to agree with your perspective. DO NOT repeat your classmates' ideas; if you choose the same show as someone else, make sure you present different arguments and evidence; if you have nothing new to say about that show, choose a different one!

All responses are due by 4:00 p.m on Tuesday, December 21st.

  1. The Christmas movie I love to watch every year is The Santa Clause featuring Tim Allen. This movie I can watch anytime of the day and it will make me feel like a kid again. I love this movie because the plot is very interesting starting when Santa falls off the roof and then Tim Allen becomes Santa. Tim Allen doesn’t believe at first until he goes to the North Pole with his son and the elves try to show him that this is really happening.
The movie is just plain awesome and I hate when a commercial comes on because I love to watch the movie. The movie is really funny because Tim Allen is the star and he is one of the funniest people I’ve ever seen on TV. The mood is the story is very happy and Christmassy. If anyone ever spoke bad about this movie my heart would drop and I would be very angry at that person. This movie couldn't of been any better until they made the 2nd one but there will never be anything better than the first.

  2. For me the best Christmas movie is It's A Wonderful Life. The story is very touching and has a true Christmas 'feel'. Some recent movies are focused on the more capitalistic ideas Christmas, and have the center point on Santa. Well I love Santa Clause as much as the next guy but I don't think that that is what makes a good Christmas film. What makes a good Christmas film is something that tells a story of good will and love. Something that related to God and his gift of love which was Jesus. What better way to fit that into a movie than to use the story of a man wanting to kill himself because his life has gone terribly wrong, but then God sends an angel to show him all the good he has done for people, which in turn changes his view on the world. The story ends with everyone giving to the main character, allowing him to save his family from debt and turn his Christmas into a fantastic time. I think that the messages of sharing and love toward all people demonstrated in this film really tell a story of Christmas.

  3. My favorite Christmas movie has got to be National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation from the late 80’s with Chevy Chase in the leading role as Clark Griswold. Watching this movie is as much a part of my family tradition as watching football. I, personally, find this to be one of the funniest movies ever. It’s funny in a way that can’t compare to the so called comedy movies of today. Additionally this was when Chevy Chase was still funny. Some people don’t like this movie or find it corny and dry with the little jokes here and there but I can’t help but laugh every time I see it. There isn’t exactly a point to the movie as far as I can tell but it simply tells the story of a not so lucky man and his family during the holiday season. I don’t know what it is really about that movie and I certainly don’t understand why other people like it either but in my humble opinion, it’s a Christmas staple.

  4. The Christmas movie that I believe is the best is the movie "Elf" staring Will Ferrell. This movie is full with chritstmas spirit with the setting and the music to go along with the movie. It is about a human being raised by elves his whole life, then is destined to find his father in New York. He does his best to fit in with the "real world", but at heart he is an elf that loves to smile, make gingerbread houses, and singing carols. The plot is written perfectly and Will Ferrell is the perfect part for this movie because he is filled with joy and is hilarious throughout the whole movie.
"Elf" is the movie for all ages. From toddlers to seniors, this movie will make you laugh and get you into the perfect mood for Christmas. I know every line in this movie because I can not get enough of it since it is a great movie to watch. "Elf" will certainly put whoever watches it into the perfect mood for the holidays. I could watch this movie over and over again because I love Christmas and this is the best Christmas movie.

  5. In my family it is an annual tradition to watch A Griswold's christmas. For this reason and many others it will always be my favorite christmas movie. I am the the youngest on of the family on this side, and now that everyone is growing up and most of us our in college we don’t always get to see everyone for the holidays. However every time I watch that movie I always remember having Christmas dinner with the whole family. The main reason we loved watching this movie was it was a comedy for every age. There was basic funny parts like when Clark waxes the bottom of the sled. But there’s also funny parts that kid’s don’t understand like the scene where Clark yells about his boss.
Unlike other Christmas movies like Elf, this comedy never seems to be over played. Our family often says lines from the movie for laughs, and there enough funny lines to keep us laughing with out the joke getting old. Another thing I like about this movie is that every year my family notices something new, even if it’s a small thing, and we usually find that pretty funny and interesting since we’ve seen it so many times.

  6. The best Christmas movie ever has to be the Chrismtas Story. It's an American Classic. Like come on, that movie is on non stop on Christmas Day. It is so funny and it never gets old. You see it practically every Christmas and you can watch it as much as you want on that day. You pretty much can picture the movie in your mind the movie playing on because you have watched it so many times. When you watch it on TV, you always know what is coming next. Even though you watch it all the time over the Christmas break, every funny scene still remains funny to you. There is not one scene that has become not funny in that movie. We watch that movie every Christmas with all my cousins and uncles and grandpaarents. It is such a blast. As much as I love the movie, I don't really mind commercials in between the movie because you will catch every scene you missed at a different time in the night. This is the best Christmas movie ever.

  7. A must see Christmas movie is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation starring Chevy Chase. In my opinion I would say that this is a hysterical movie because it shows you the traditional wacky American family during the holidays. It shows you the father who is worried about how the lights look like on the house and wanting to receive a nice raise for his family to make the holidays a little more cheerful during the holidays. Then you have the mother who is being driven insane by the holidays between cooking for the family and having her husband making her somewhat nervous with the lights. Then you have the kids who are annoyed by their parents. Then with all this commotion going on the family has all of the relatives visiting them for the holiday.
I would recommend this movie to anyone because it is a very funny and entertaining movie. I would compare this to most families because of all the chaos going on during the holiday season but still being around your loved ones. Another reason I would recommend this movie is because it is a cheerful movie that just puts you in a good and cheerful mood and puts you in the holiday spirit.

  8. A Christmas movie that I have to watch every year at least ten times is "A Christmas Story". My Family and I have watched this movie countless times around the Holidays for as long as I can remember. The characters in the movie are what appeal to us the most. In some way we can relate our hectic Christmas' to theirs. With nothing seeming to go the right way, in the end, everything turns out right.
Not only does TBS have a full day of "A Christmas Story" running but it airs on alot of other channels as well. Almost any chance we get to sit down and watch it, we all will. I'am sure that watching this movie is a tradition that I will not let fade away.

  9. One of my favorite Christmas movies is the original "Home Alone". This movie is good to watch because it is funny and contains a good Christmas message at the end. Watching Kevin maim and injure the burgalars is very entertaining. And when Kevin goes to the Church on Christmas Eve and meets old man Marley the give a couple good messages out. This is a classic Christmas movie and has earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest grossing comedy ever (and as of December 19th 2010, it remains so).

  10. I going to have to say that The Christmas story is the absolute best movie because of the crazy plot the whole movie has and the chracters arre so perfect because they remind the viewers about how hectic the holidays could get in certain households.I would recomend this movie to any christmas lover because everyone can relate to the chracters wether or not they have someone in there family like that or if they dont I'd think will still love it. I watch it maybe 3 or 4 times during the holiday season because it makes our christmas maybe a little bit brighter, also when your watching a movie like a Christmas Story you can already get some general idea of what might happen in the next scene because the narator in the movie tends to revovle around the idea of a normal day during his holiday memories

  11. The best Christmas movie ever is Elf, hands down. It is a hilarious comedy about a boy who is raised in the North Pole with Santa’s elves. After he reaches a certain age Santa sends him to New York City in search for his father and when he does, the funniest things happen. He prepares breakfast as leftover spaghetti and maple syrup with sprinkles. He makes incredible Christmas things like the City of New York in Lego’s and a Rocking Horse out of the TV stand. This movie is a great for the family and it will keep everyone not only laughing during Christmas, but it will prepare us for the true meanings of Christmas. It is the greatest movie about Christmas ever.

  12. The best Christmas movie ever is The Year Without A Santa Claus. I am actually suprised that no one else has mentioned this particular movie. Maybe it is just not as popular to other people, but to me and my family it is a tradition to watch it every single Christmas. It is basically about how Santa decides he does not want to have Christmas this year because he thinks no one cares. He late realizes that everybody still believes. I like how this movie shows Christmas spirit and goodwill. I really recommend this movie to watch to cheer you up on this wonderful holiday.
